I was walking like a dead man lost in a dry land solitary wandering alone across the hot sand had to keep myself alive when there was no life left inside me had to dig deep for water when my soul was dry and thirsty seen the birds of death standing round the water like an epitaph for some dear departed seen the birds of death standing round the levee looking like they want something or maybe have condemned me but when I reached her and seen her turn to look at me seen her eyes like blue water, seen the end of these worries and there in the sand as her touch went through me she disappeared in the sand as the sun beat down upon me Now the Birds of Death can't keep me away from you these Birds of Death can't keep me away from you the Birds of Death can't keep me away from you I'd kill the Birds of Death to get to you I was walking like a dead man crooked in a bad way past mountains and valleys stumbled along a lost highway all dressed in black like the Birds of Death I was walking To find my love and send these birds away Seen water in the sand vanish seen her in my dreams as the sickle moon above carved something inside me the stars at night were like reflections from a cool stream my throat was dry and I wondered what it could mean but when I reached her... Now the Birds of Death can't keep me away from you... I'd kill the Birds of Death to get to you

Dark Suit 06:54
I put my dark suit on and I went walking on a dirty windy day met my love by the grave I had my black boots on and I watched her crying goodbye darlin' I have to go this time there's no denying she lifted her black veil I saw her red rimmed eyes and I wondered if this is how it looks when an angel thinks she's dying with her lips like cherries red she spoke to me meet me at the station tonight we'll take the 12:15 at first I did not see her there she'd slipped away in time then out from the shadows she stepped tickets in her hand she held me fast with her brilliant eyes say you'll always love me true love goes beyond the grave and you will always be with me we were all alone on our car as we fell to sleep I woke to find her hand was cold and she had ceased to breathe we were to be married the next day I had the rings in my vest but now she'd died and I don't know why but love must follow death I put her ring on her cold hand I put the other on mine then she and I held hands me and my bride I took that straight razor from my boot and I drew it down my wrist the blood warmed both our hands and I gave her one last kiss

where is the water (running in the well) where's the blacksmith's daughter (singing by the well) where is the water (running in the well) I'm dry and I need water I'll never rest in this hell where is the water (running in the well) where's the ring I bought her (still hear mission bells) I see her in my darkness I hear her in my dreams you know this house is empty but that little girl ain't gone away it seems where is the water (running in the well) I met my true lover last night at the well we embraced and she kissed me I feel my time is nigh when the bell tolls for me together again we'll be on the other side

There's a candle on the table the wind don't blow it out there's a panther come a-stalking when all your luck's run out sometimes my true love she's a black cat crossing my road sometimes an angel or a swan love can save you at sunset but it can cut you at dawn there's a candle on the table my love she's not blown out the wind now feels cold my dear but it's blowing from the south the panther keeps on coming near to our filthy little town when she's gone they'll wear a death mask and a dollar for a crown I went down to the river in the woods outside of town I saw one Pretty Polly after another come floating on down there is evil and there's love my dear and there's this world in between there are things there in the forest we have known and we have seen there's a train that blows its whistle weeds and thistles come in May Love will keep us in the garden when there's Fire on the lake Yeah, Love will keep us in the garden when there's Fire on the lake

bloodless veins a cold dead heart you're never coming back as I knew you try as you will to reach me but I'm down here and you're out there if there's hell on earth I'm living it rotting bones leave troubled hearts I scuttle through this wrecking yard don't look back don't ever look back if ever I might see you there and feel the coldness in the air I won't look back I won't look back the granite stone six feet above you weighs heavy on my troubled soul try as I will to forgive you you left me here all goddamn alone if there's hell on earth I'm living it
