I had my black boots on
and I watched her crying

this time there's no denying

she lifted her black veil
I saw her red rimmed eyes and
I wondered if this is how it looks
when an angel thinks she's dying

with her lips like cherries red
she spoke to me
meet me at the station tonight
we'll take the 12:15

at first I did not see her there
she'd slipped away in time
then out from the shadows she stepped
tickets in her hand

she held me fast with her brilliant eyes
say you'll always love me
true love goes beyond the grave
and you will always be with me

we were all alone on our car
as we fell to sleep
I woke to find her hand was cold
and she had ceased to breathe

we were to be married the next day
I had the rings in my vest
but now she'd died and I don't know why
but love must follow death

I put her ring on her cold hand
I put the other on mine
then she and I held hands
me and my bride

I took that straight razor from my boot
and I drew it down my wrist
the blood warmed both our hands
